You don't *have* to take visual arts to get into beauty school, but it may make you a better hairdresser and artist if you do. It'll benefit you, to have an artistic knowledge. Hair and beauty is all about creativity, and art classes can help you learn to work those muscles. So if you're interested in taking some art classes, do so. It can only help.

You may also want to see if you can get involved in your school's theater productions, and see if you can do hair and makeup for them. It's worth asking about. Likewise, you can see if any local community theaters near you could take you on as a helper in that sort of thing. It'd be fun, and it'd start building your skills in that area.

Lastly, see if you can't get a job of some sort in a local beauty shop. You won't be doing hair, but you will gain exposure to the environment and the business, and it'll give you a reference, and it'll look good on a resume.

Good luck!
References :
To go to beauty school, all you need to do is plunk down your tuition money. To do well as a hair stylist, it definitely helps to have an artistic sense of how to create shapes through cuts and color. There is a huge difference in the talent (and on going education) between the haircutters at the quick cuts and those in the upper escelon salons.

Party hairdos are a relative rarity - the occasional bride and prom night - so you might want to rethink that idea!
