I love art, but hate competition within the modern visual arts! This is because I feel that the judging is no fairer than a group of school governers judging an easter egg competition! I also feel that a lot of artists are overlooked because they 'do not fit in'. What do you think? Btw…no I am not an overlooked artist, nor am I a parent whose child's career in art has suffered a set back by losing the last easter egg competition lol!!!!

There is a fundamental difference.
School art teachers advise and judge learning painters according to strict standards: perspective, colours, etc. and of course -if they are good- in terms of creativity, i.e. the student's future.

Critics on the other hand have to follow fashions, trends etc. as their only interest is in how much will it sell ? And, as buyers (who call themselves "investors") are often snobbish, art critics do not judge the artistic value but the future commercial value of a painter.

This is not only true in painting: in sculpture, in music, even in cinema you see the same differences.

I’m a senior in high school. i currently attend a specialized school for art. i want to go to a Visual arts college (BFA or MFA) but i’m not sure where to start.

I want:
Privet Art college (not a university)
a larger town
accredited fine arts school
experimental
Flexible programs
conceptual
craft oriented (printmaking, fiber work, pottery)
experienced staff
financel aid opportunities

if any one has any idea, guidance or websites that could help me, that would be amazing!!! +10 points to best answer

You need a BFA before you can get an MFA. An MFA is a master’s degree. You need the bachelors first.

You want a pure art school in a larger town, accredited, flexible and experimental, crafts oriented, etc. I’m going to suggest some that I think you may really like.

My #1 choice for you is the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. It’s actually one of my favorite art schools, because while yes, it’s very good and well respected, it’s also *extremely* flexible. Depending on the type of degree you do, you work with your advisor to plan your own schedule of courses. The professors there are great. It’s small enough that you don’t feel like a number, but large enough to have great resources, and it’s not only in Boston, but it also shares some facilities with Mass Art. Can you tell I like that school?

Others that I think may fit you well include Maryland Institute College of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, California College of the Arts, and the NY State College of Ceramics (which is also good at glass and fibers and wood) at Alfred U.

Cranbrook Academy fits you in all ways, but I’m not sure Bloomfield Hills, MI is a large enough town for you. But look at it. I’ve never been to Michigan, and so I can’t tell you if that town is cool. But Cranbrook has an amazing reputation in the fields you mentioned, and seems to fit in other ways, too.

Another I’d like to tee up is the Rochester Institute of Technology. Now that’s not 100% a fit, because it’s really a university, not a pure art school, but it *acts* like a pure art school. Maybe you should take a look. And it’s an *amazing* crafts school. Printmaking to die for, etc. Very strong.

Arts high school have a lot to offer… and you will find more people who are serious about creative expressions.

Do your best work, call the high school and see if they have portfolio requirements, make your work as presentable as possible….

remember that you are in the early stages of your creative education … and follow your dream

so i''m audtioning for an art school for visual arts, but i need to make a portfolio for the audtion. i have a lot of photography,

should i buy a professional portfolio or should i just get and really nice binder?

also, do you have any suggestions in making the portfolio?

For the portfolio itself, make sure you have diversity so you can show the school that you can work with a variety of mediums; photography, digital, acrylics, pencils, etc… and use a variety of subject matter, but avoid Anime. Apparently, most schools look down upon that.

For the case, I think it depends on how large your works are. Most schools provide requirements for how to assemble your works. Anything larger than standard paper size should be photographed, for example, and included. Anything 3D needs to be photographed at various angles.

Call the school and ask what the portfolio requirements are exactly. Good luck! I, too, need to put together a portfolio, for University! Fun.
