Many, many great artists list Art Student's League of NY on their resumes . . .

Early instructors included William Merritt Chase, J. Alden Weir, Walter Shirlaw, Frederick Dielman, John H. Twachtman, Kenyon Cox, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Daniel Chester French, Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Frank Duveneck, Thomas W. Dewing and Arthur Wesley Dow. Since those early days, scores of other well-known artists have been instructors or lecturers: Frank Vincent DuMond, George Bridgman and Kenneth Hayes Miller among them. Their students became the well-known professionals of another generation and their legacy continues into the 21st century.

Many famous artists who have shaped the vocabulary of art worldwide have been instructors, lecturers and students at the League. They include, among many others, George Bellows, Thomas Hart Benton, Alexander Calder, Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O'Keeffe, Barnett Newman, Norman Rockwell, Winslow Homer, Man Ray, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Louise Nevelson, Reginald Marsh, Romare Bearden, Red Grooms, Donald Judd, Roy Lichtenstein, Mark Rothko, Ben Shahn and Cy Twombly.

My brother is a classical musician.

Many of my friends would never dream of going to an opera, ballet or orchestral concert. They feel it is an exclusive world, poulated by snobs and elitists where they do not belong.

They would much prefer a film or a rock concert which they feel is more inclusive and they can relate to.

Sadly, from what I have seen of the classical arts world there are many very wealthy snobby, elitist types from public school backgrounds who beleive it should be kept very "exclusive". Although I also know really nice down to earth classical musicians.

By contrast most of the rock musicians I know are very working class, self-taught and very down to earth. They beleive that anyone can do what they do, with hard work and passion, while in the classical world its all about "technique" and "oh but you don't have the TALENT dahling!"

I enjoy both classical and rock music btw.

Whats your view?

Elitism poor and simple. I also think people feel intimidated when they go. A friend of mine studied classic music and is such a snob when it comes to rock. Always talking bout lack of chord structure and poor singing technique.

With school education becoming more and more geared to providing successful career opportunities in an increasingly competitive world, arts such as music, dance, painting and theatre seem to be disappearing from school curriculum and syllabi. What can we do to cure this deficiency?
YAHOO! ANSWERS staff notice: This is really Shubha Mudgal, the classical singer and performer.

As a professional painter and part time studio art college instructor, I find that the arts are incredibly important to opening the mind to all kinds of subjects, not just art. We don't value intuitive knowledge in our culture. It is this intuitive intelligence that helps scientists, inventors, engineers, researchers, theorists, philosophers, mathmeticians, artists and doctors make very important decisions and finds in their fields. In this way, art and the processes that are learned in all art forms touch all professions. Art in all forms helps open us up to those intuitive processes. I think that the arts are some of the most important aspects of education.
To cure this deficiency in our education system we simply need to offer more classes, opportunities for students to participate in the arts, and allow students to bring these arts out into the community. But we can't do this when schools are constantly cutting funding to the arts. I believe that the arts should be more integrated into an overall liberal arts curriculum from Kindergarten thru college. To do this we need a commitment from school districts, politicians, parents and educators to do this. We need an allocation of some of the tax dollars that go to education to fund art education. I also think a public relations campaign on a national level that spells out the benefits of arts in our education system would help get the public behind it. It would have to be on the level of how it is not only beneficial in and of itself, but how art touches all of our lives. How it is important not only for personal expression but for human communication. And, how learning and practicing an art form is great for learning other subjects and making break throughs in those professions. Afterall, Einstein played the violin beautifully.

It seems that our educational system is on the wrong path, we should be teaching a multitude of things earlier to our children.
Unfortunately, if the schools don't do it for us, it has to be done in the home, but how can it when most Americans don't have a clue themselves?
A world Atlas should be in every home for children to study.–Along with text books on Biology, Astronomy, Geology, Art, etc. What do you think?

Well, the government and therefore most schools at present, have chosen to focus on math and English. Get those math scores up! Those English scores have got to improve! Oh, and yeah, keep teaching science and social studies, but don't focus on it.

I teach English at a private school I have also taught public school. I agree that history is important. But the tax dollars aren't going for it.

Don't even get me started on Art and Music.

Lets take it from: ok Ive done a bunch of cool abstract paintings, now what?

Thanks for your help….

Hello there, I'm an artist and I've found it difficult, until fairly recently, to get my work noticed. I guess it's been mostly due to lack of confidence on my part though. I found that looking for art competitions via a search engine like Yahoo or Google was a good start. You can find all sorts of varied and media specific competions all over the world to enter.

Have a look at this website http://www.artministry.co.uk/services/delta_cms/content/default.aspx they give you loads of info an support if you're just starting up. They can give you advice on how to market yourself, and you can sell your work via the website.

Good luck!

My very best friend in the entire world is an amazing artist. I want to help him get set up in the art world, maybe art school or even get his on showing somewhere. He already sells some pieces but I want to get his name out there. How do I go about doing this?

If you have the resources to help get your friend's name out there, there are many ways in which to do this.

Right now, it seems as if you have decided to become his agent. Very well then, you will need to create slides or digital images of his best work. When you photograph the art, make sure that the art fills the frame and nothing else.

Help him write a detailed resume. On the resume you would list his accomplishments–and any schooling. List any and all awards his work might have received. If he is self-taught, that's OK. In the arts, that is a good thing because no one can take credit for having taught him what he knows and his style will be unique unto himself.

Go on line and look in art magazines, also check the newspaper for upcoming events dealing with the arts, such as: Is there an art group meeting somewhere? Are there art exhibit openings happening? Take him to these places to meet the public and the artists who might be in attendance. Network with these people. Ask them questions about their work and ask them what they have done to further their artistic pursuits. Most importantly, talk to the owners of the establishments where these events are held. Ask them how one might also show their work.

Make copies of the resume and slip it into folders together with slide sheets of your friend's most recent work. You can also include a digital disk of the same images. You can visit art galleries and inquire as to the possibilities of your friend being represented by these galleries and or you can ask them if they would be interested in allowing your friend to have an extended exhibit.

Have your friend join local and out of town and/or out of state art groups. He will be expected to pay a membership fee. They will probably hold monthly meetings to discuss business at hand and most of them have guest demonstrators or speakers. The one important thing to remember is that these groups have annual group juried shows. They might even show as a group in local galleries and museums. When shopping around for membership to an art group, always consider groups where they have a screening in process. These groups are usually well respected because an artist has to qualify to belong. Another thing to consider is what these groups offer in the way of awards for their exhibits. Do they give merchandise or cash awards? And if they present cash awards, what amount does the Best In Show ribbon bring? Usually, the higher the award amount , the bigger and more important is that group.

There are art exhibits out there that are not sponsored by any art group, but by churches, schools, galleries and museums.

Always have a large supply of slides and digital disks of the art images on hand because that is what is usually called for in the exhibit prospectus. (Slides are usually the norm because they show a true example of the artwork. Bear in mind that clean and crisp images must be submitted.)

In order to be successful in the art field, your friend must maintain a large body of work. Most exhibits call for recent works done within a 1-5 year period. The prospectus might even state that only works that have never been shown before within a certain mile radius can be submitted.

There may be exhibits that your friend enters, but the juror may not accept his work into the show. If that happens the entry fee is nonreturnable, as it becomes a part of the award purse.

I wish your friend all the luck in the world and God bless you for wanting to help him.

so something's been troubling me lately.

i am a singer and actress. it's my LIFE. and all my life i've been going to an extremely nice (though public) school. but after performing in a play with 19 other kids that all go to performing arts schools, i've been thinking very hard about going to a performing arts school myself. the thing is, the school i go to (and the school i'll be going to next year) offer really good theatre programs and opportunities, and ive made soooo many friends at my current school. my three best friends in the world all go to my school. it's just…i can't help but fantasize about going to a peforming arts school, but i'm worried about making new friends and talent and all the works. i need some help deciding. i have almost a year to choose, but it's such a tough desicion. i LOVE my current school, i LOVE the people that go to it, but a performing arts school would offer me so much more and i'd be doing so much more of what i love to do. *makes "HELP!!" face*

I agree with the person that answered above me. Friends are important, but with the age of technology is is really easy to keep in touch. As the years go on you will make new friends anyway, I know when I went from middle school to high school I made all new friends, and hardly even saw my other friends, especially because I took lots of music classes. My new friends were all in band because the one thing that didn't change when I switched schools was my passion for music.

Your passion for singing and acting will never change, and if you truly think that you want to pursue a career involving them you should get the best performing arts education you can. You will meet people there with as much drive and passion for the arts as you have. Believe me, your public school may have a good arts program but a performing arts school… performing arts is all they do! Don't let this opportunity pass you by!

Best of luck!
