Let's say I go to college in Minnesota or Illinois (I live in NJ) and come back to the east to get a job in NYC. Will I have less of chance of getting a good job because I went to school somewhere else? What if these universities are in the top 20 as dictated by the US News and World Report rankings? What if it is a small college in the top 30 of all liberal arts colleges? Any advice? Real-life input? Thanks!

as long as the college you go to is accredited, you will not have any problems at all. the most important aspect is your grades. if you graduate in the deans list and accademically very good, that is what matters. like the fellow before me said, all prospective employers see what you have accomplished while in school. not just because you go to the top colleges means you are assured of a job. examples are my two sons. they went to the university of new orleans. they did not go the LSU or tulane university as we had limited income. they have GREAT jobs. one is a geologist in a big oil company and the other one is a project engineer also in a prominent company. they both graduated with outstanding grades and had no problem with getting jobs. remember, it is what you accomplish in college and not the college itself that matters. put your hopes within yourself and your achievements and you will go far. good luck!

My sister got rejected from her top pick which was UCLA. She did get accepted to UC Irvine and some other small liberal arts colleges in the area though. Her problem now is that she's obsessed with rankings and all other schools seem to pale in comparison with UCLA. She says she doesn't want to go to a second rate school. Would it be better for her to go to UC Irvine or to go to a community college and transfer into UCLA later? As far as rankings go, UC Irvine is at #44 which I think is pretty good. I heard that the difference in undergrad ranking doesn't make that much difference anyway. What should I tell her?

It depends on what her major is and whether she intends to go to grad school afterwards. If grad school, then yes, undergrad does have some importance although UC Irvine is still a good school. Otherwise, if it's just undergrad, it doesn't really matter too much as long as she gets the education she needs to succeed in life.

I definitely want to be a novelist and/or maybe look into journalism on the side, so I would like to attend a school with a reputable program in those fields (like creative writing, american/english literature, journalism, etc). I want to go a rather small/medium sized, undergraduate school where classes are intimate and students and faculty really get to know each other by names rather than going to a school where you’re one in a hundred in your class. I’m still looking, but I need some suggestions. Did you or anyone you know attend colleges similar to what I’m looking for? I would greatly appreciate it if you can help me out. And please don’t just refer me to college rankings.

10 POINTS for best thorough answer!!!

The quality of a school’s English Department is highly correlated with the overall quality of the school. Therefore, the list of best liberal arts colleges for English is pretty much the same as the list of best liberal arts colleges. US News ranks liberal arts colleges. See the first link below.

The second link is a ranking of top graduate programs in English. These schools all have excellent undergraduate programs. Schools like Duke and Stanford only have about 6000 undergraduates. Most classes at these schools have fewer than 20 students.

Some colleges may opt out of rankings
They didn't call for an all-out boycott, but presidents of dozens of liberal arts colleges signaled their intent Tuesday to stop cooperating with U.S. News & World Report's college rankings. What that means exactly is not spelled out. Because most college presidents must answer to trustees, faculty and other constituents, "the decision to participate or withdraw from the U.S. News rankings rests with the individual institutions," says a statement released Tuesday by the Annapolis Group, whose members include 121 liberal arts colleges.Even so, "the majority" of the 80 presidents who attended the group's annual meeting in Annapolis, Md., "expressed their intent not to participate in the annual … ranking exercise."
The group also said it would work with other organizations to develop a Web-based alternative to rankings that would provide parents and students with meaningful ways to compare schools. please write me a quick short summary about this~
oh and there's more but if u want to see it go to this website http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2007-06-20-college-rankings_N.htm
srry! i can usually write my own summaries not that i'm lazy. it's just rilly confusing!!please help : )

This just means that the liberal arts colleges don't agree with the college rankings from US News and World Report. USNWR makes a list every year of top-ranking colleges and universities, and apparently liberal arts colleges haven't been doing so hot. Now the liberal arts schools are starting to disagree with the ranks.

Hope this helps!

I want to become an Occupational Therapist. Not only have I looked at the US and World news rankings for the best OT graduate schools in the country, but most importantly in New York . From forums, and yahoo answers, I have read many mixed reviews on University of Buffalo and Stony Brook (especially SB). I’m pretty burned out from searching and trying to decide which college. I’m also looking at the pass rates, teacher to student ratio and more. I’m in CC right now, my first year, second semester. I changed my major to Liberal arts math and sciences since I now want to become a OT instead of a social worker. Someone please help.

an OT may need more than a bachelors. While entry level jobs might be available, an advanced degree will get you further down the road, even if it is while you are working.

UB and SUNYSB are both fine schools. SB is a ghost town on the weekends, and Buffalo requires that you LIKE snow.

SB is essentially a commuter college for LI students…. to go there and pay rent off campus is expensive

The real issue here is why, oh why you would depend on USNews for information? Their scales are so skewed it is not even funny.

For some reason I am really drawn to the Economic Freedom Index website, if you've seen that. I think I enjoy rankings and applied statistics. I love web design and making up new fonts, which I'm pretty good at. I'm 2 years ahead in school (I should be in 7th, but I skipped 3rd and 6th grade, so I'm in 9th right now). I'm not the best at math so I don't want a math-heavy career. I'm okay at writing, reading, etc. My main interests are statistics, art, music, and just being creative!

You might say this is a little early to start thinking about careers, but I'm just curious to see what's out there! Thanks

I agree with Graphics Design. Applied Statistics is a really good major to have, and there are a lot of job opportunities available. But, if you are a creative person, it may not interest you to simply "number crunch" for the rest of your life. Try out lots of different classes now, and maybe one particular area will spark your interest!!
