Need advice on Martial Arts School?

I'm in a bit of a situation right now. A new MMA school opened up in my area and covers all aspects of mma and has really good instructors. My current school is pretty decent, but it doesn't cover all aspects of mma and I need to pay extra for certain classes. I'd really like to join this new school, but I have 6 months left on my contract at my current school and is bjj only, with boxing and kickboxing being extra. I plan on training a lot this summer. My current school charges me 120 a month unlimited. Extra classes are 15 dollars each, which I try to do 2-3 times per week. So we can say thats about 160 a month? The new school that opened is offering me 150 a month unlimited, covers all aspects of MMA and is open the entire day, has a weight room, and has better bjj instruction on top of all aspects of mma. I'm really unsure on what I should do… I'm a 21 year old college student and I only make about 850$ a month at my job. any advice? need to make this choice today.
45bucks a week in extra classes = an additional 160 a week on top of the 120 is what I'm saying.

i dont know if there is an early cancelation fee at your first school, but i would try to get to that new one if i were you.

Martial Arts Instruction

I have Shorin Ryu and Kenpo training. I am time pressed. Any opinions on the Adrian Roman Distance Learning Kenpo program or suggestions for other programs? What about Shotokan? There is a less expensive school that isn’t a sport karate school. I’m into self defense and forms not into sport fighting like my Kenpo school. Any other suggestions? My current school is so big that maybe I get 5 minutes a class with an instructor if I’m lucky so I’m not progressing. I figured at least video study would let me concentrate on the techniques.

Video can’t correct mistakes. Best thing to do is talk to your Sensei about the situation. If that does not work out then find another dojo. One where you would get more personal attention.

Martial arts school contract. Owner is a Fraud.?

Last May I signed a 1 year contract to an mma school based on their website and information given to me during the “tour”.

-The school is part of a large franchise throughout North America.
-On the website it states that you can cancel at any time with a written letter and a small fee.

-I was told by the owner that their instructors are locked into a 5 year contract and can’t leave until they fulfill their time there.

-I looked at their website and saw all of the instructors, and these instructors were verified as the instructors by the owner.

-1 month later half of their most qualified instructors left because the owner was not paying them correctly. There was no 5 year contract.

-The franchise owner forced the MMA school to take down all signs and change the name of the school because he no longer wanted that school in the franchise because of how bad it was run.

-Now the school is under a different franchise but is the same facility. I am still being charged even though it is a different company now. On my statement, it shows a different name that is withdrawing from my account(the new name of the school).

-Half of the instructors that were on the website never set one foot into the school.

-I can no longer learn because the quality of instruction has gone down.

-The employee’s there have looked up porn and illegal drug information during the day while people were training, (some below the age of 18)

-Sexual harrassment towards females, which caused their womens class to fall apart.

-Racist remarks from the owner.

-He did not give his members a copy of the membership contract, but I happened to find a copy from an irrate ex-employee. She sent it to me via email.

-The contract has the franchise logo on it, but whenever people went to cancel their memberships, he stated that the contract was to that particular school and not the franchise.

-While going to the new website, the rate of this particular franchise is 99 dollars a month with a 1 year contract compared to the 149.99 that I am paying now.

-When I first signed up the class schedule had about 2 times as many classes and was open Saturday and Sunday. Now, during the week there are fewer classes and it is no longer open on the weekends.

-Where do I go from here? Is there anything that I can possibly do to either cancel, or stop paying and threaten to take him to court? I have no idea.

-This is the information I have.
-Screenshots of the webpages with the cancellation policy
-the changes in their class schedule
-their instructors that never stepped foot inside of the place and were being advertised
-a copy of the contract
-screenshots of the new website with the different rates
-as well as my bank statements that now show a different company name that is withdrawing from my debit.
-Web history, showing pornography and drug research.

You can do anything you want to do… If you want to stop paying, then stop. It’ll be up to them to try to enforce the contract. It’s not illegal to not pay something. You don’t go to jail.

The longer you pay, the stronger HIS case is. Stop paying immediately.

If what you say is even close to true, they won’t lift a finger to pursue this fraudulent debt. It’s possible that out of spite they could put this on your credit report, but if they are as unorganized as you claim, I doubt he’ll be able to get his crap together to do it.

Looking for studio art classes in DC area?

A friend of mine is looking to take a studio art class in the DC area. She paints in oil, but that’s not crucial. She wants a model to observe, wants to be with other artists. Don’t think it is really about getting ‘instruction’ – more about a nice shared studio atmosphere. Really expensive would not be good. I suggested a) a community college with studio art classes b) an art school with studio classes c) a collective of artists who share a model and studio space. I don’t have specifics on any of the above for the DC area. Any artists out there with ideas??

Martial Arts School 1 year contract. False verbal information.?

Hello, I posted yesterday about this topic, but did not post enough detail. I signed a 1 year contract at a mixed martial arts gym based on what was said during the tour of the gym and false information given to me at the front desk before I signed. The main reason I joined this school was due to 5 of their instructors. Before I signed, I asked them, " since I am signing a contract, what's stopping the instructor's from leaving? Do they have to sign a contract as well?" He said that they all had to sign 5 year contracts in order to teach at the school. He said they have to serve out their tours before leaving. 1 month later, 4 out of 5 of their top instructors are gone and their mixed martial arts coach is gone. The schedule at the gym has changed and they are currently looking for replacements. They will not be able to match the quality of instruction with replacements(fact). What steps can I take in order to resolve this?
I am a 21 year old college student that works full time and has a ton of bills, I don't appreciate 150 dollars being stolen from me per month or even putting myself in a position of confronting the owner for a cancellation fee because he felt like lying to me.
150$ per month 1 year contract. Can be frozen due to illness or injury. I'm only 1 month into it.

File a consumer protection complaint against the school with the state attorney general's office of consumer protection. Generally, any oral representations are usually deemed to be merged into the written contract which is signed. However, the statement that the school orally gave assurances of the continuation of the employment of certain instructors was an important inducement for you to sign.

Although you have a binding contract, I think it is relevant to file a consumer protection complaint. Gyms, health clubs, and similar organizations do not like to have the Consumer Protection People breathing down their necks. This may be the best option you have. With the Consumer Protection people from the state, you have more strength on your side. You have a better chance of success than going to small claims court.

Added later:

You should write a letter to the business owner (or franchise holder) enumerating your complaints. You should send it certified mail, return receipt requested. Also, for the sake of assuring that they get the message because some businesses might not sign for certified mail, send a copy to them by regular mail. Keep a copy of the letter and the return receipt after the letter has been received. If the business is part of a franchise operation, also send a copy of the same letter to the national headquarters (franchisor) by certified mail, return receipt requested.

Make a note of everybody you talk to, who, when, content of conversation, as well as the identity of others who may be present. Your problems may be an indication of a more pervasive problem.

State consumer protection bureaus generally require you to try to work out problems with business owners before they become involved. What you are doing now is building a file which you can provide to back up your consumer complaint.

Never give up the original copy of your complaint file. If anybody wants a copy, give them photocopies.

Is it good to combine iaido training with karate training?

I wanna start out Iaido while combining it with karate instruction. What do you people think? Also, can you tell me of a martial arts school in Santa Monica CA or Los Angeles that teaches iaido?

I study Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (Iaido) and Toyama-ryu Batto-Jutsu.
These fall in the category of the bugeisha (sword practitioner) the darker side of the yin and yang.
At the same time, I study Shotokan Karate-do and also consider myself a Budo-ka (martial artist) the lighter side of the arts.
I love both and benefit from both. Swordsmanship now-a-days is more for cutting down the enemy within.
Karate-do being a more modern martial holds true to it's title of being good self-defense.
If you have the money and the time/dedication you'll love both and will develop many skills needed to survive in these times.

Have you ever sent drawings & got enrolled in Art Instruction schools? how did you do? (I just got enrolled but gotta start somewhere.)

Almost anyone will be accepted. These "schools" are a business.
You pay for their courses, materials, etc……. and when you finish, they issue you a certificate stating that you've finished their courses.
If you want to study art, enroll in a local art class, club, etc….

Why do I start too many hobbies/goals/projects I cant possibly meet or finish?

I'm like a conneseur of interest in different things. I just keep adding projects to the list and dont finish the previous. I guess the right side of my brain is too big.
here are some of my hobbies right now
boxing bag
arm wrestling,train with grips,but i think i gave that up
creating my website,done
lifting weights
gardening
building an entertainment center
fishing, and building a fish pond, almost done
video games, usually shooters or strategy
art instruction school,almost done
a couple different art contests
building my own computer,almost done
car audio system/home, never ending
internet research on government conspiracies,haha,why not
oh and i like to watch monsterquest and mythbuster type TV
and im always trying to come up with ideas for inventions,some good
I cant sleep alot because im always thinkin about stupid stuff like this, anyone else out there like this?

Just the same, I understand. Some projects get put on hold because of weather, finances, material-availability, or a mental road-block… others just due to a lack of interest or CHANGE of interest.

I have dozens of projects in mid-work, both at home and up at my brother's ranch. At the ranch, alot of things were on hold during the winter weather (roofing, fencing, irrigation-lines)… but we'd sketch on paper and the computer, and talk talk talk over beers. At HOME, I have a model railroad in it's 3rd Year of construction, and about 75 model airplanes in production. Some awaiting the right humidity to start airbrushing again, others awaiting aftermarket parts.

I DO like the one respondent who mentioned ORGANIZATION… a sketch / draft pad for taking notes and adding new ideas. I have BINDERS for many of my projects, and also have moved alot to my computers (desk & laptop) so I can share with my brother.
